The Best Kava Tea Recipe
If you’ve taken our advice above and have purchased some high quality kava root ground powder or root pieces, you are ready to get started! Remember, like other types of tea, Kava can be very fine, so you’ll want to use an herbal teapot that comes with an infuser. For those of you who do not have an infuser, you can use a straining bag to help you remove some of the larger root pieces that might otherwise get into your tea. Doing so makes consuming kava tea much more enjoyable.
Even though undoubtedly the best kava tea recipe that we’ve come across over the years, there can still be a semi bitter text that might irritate those HTH readers who have a sensitivity to flavor. This is why we have included the addition of cinnamon and sugar into our recipe! Lastly, remember that this recipe can be consumed piping hot or chilled on ice. We love its versatility!
Ingredients (2 servings)
- Water (16 oz.)
- Ground Kava Root (6 tablespoons)
- Sugar (2 tablespoons)
- Vanilla Extract (1 teaspoon)
- Ground Cinnamon (1 tablespoon)
Instructions
- Begin by pouring water into your herbal teapot. You’ll want to place the teapot on your range at a medium heat allowing it to come to a low boil.
- Next, reduce the heat to low.
- Now is the time to add the ingredients, including kava root powder (or ground kava root), vanilla extract, sugar, and ground cinnamon into your infuser. Remember that the cinnamon and sugar are optional, depending on your preference!
- Allow the ingredients to simmer for around 10 minutes (Tip: the longer you simmer, the stronger the resulting tea).
- Now is the time to carefully remove the teapot from the heat and turn off your range. We let the teapot cool for about 5 minutes (keeps us from burning ourselves!).
- After cooling, you can pour the kava tea into teacups and even add extra sugar if desired. Be sure to stir as sugar is added to allow it to dissolve uniformly.
- That’s it! You have followed the instructions for the best kava tea recipe and you are ready to serve and enjoy!

Best Kava Tea Recipe – My Experience
I was intrigued by the idea of the “relaxation” and “stress relieving” benefits of kava tea. I knew that I wanted to find the best kava tea recipe if I was going to give it a shot! I purchased some kava root tea, fired up my infuser, and followed the directions. The first thing I noticed was that the kava tea did have a slightly bitter taste (that is why my second try included the cinnamon and sugar idea that I’ve included above). Notwithstanding the the slight bitterness, the tea went down smoothly. I would add that it is quite filing, and that you do not need (nor want) to drink more than one cup. About 15 minutes after I began consumption I did notice that I felt more relaxed and in what I would describe as a more generally uplifted and positive state of mind!
